RoRo shipping provides dependable solutions for transporting substantial mining equipment. This method efficiently manages large-scale machinery, reducing handling times and minimising damage risk during transit. Where a unit sits outside a ramp’s height or axle limits, we tell you early and price the alternative.
Streamlined Machinery Handling
Moving large machinery presents significant logistical challenges for construction companies. RoRo shipping simplifies equipment transfer onto vessels, accelerating the process while ensuring machinery arrives in optimal condition, ready for deployment. We also mobilise plant for building and construction projects.
Preparation keeps the booking on schedule. Plant needs a clean-down of tracks, undercarriage, and cabin, because soil and plant material can trigger biosecurity intervention from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) on arrival. Fuel is typically run down, batteries isolated, attachments secured and rams retracted. We confirm carrier requirements before the unit leaves site and arrange the wharf cartage leg at either end.
When RoRo beats a container or break bulk
Three questions decide the method. Can the unit move on its own wheels or tracks, or be towed on a roll trailer? Does it sit within the ramp and deck clearances on your lane? And does the sailing frequency meet your mobilisation date?
Answer yes to all three and RoRo is usually the cleaner option: no dismantling, no crane bookings, no packing, and less terminal time at either end. If the unit must be split into components, or exceeds deck clearances and axle loadings, break bulk cargo or heavy lift cargo is the better route. Where a mobilisation combines several methods, we manage it as full service project logistics.
Ports and lanes
RoRo services call a defined set of terminals rather than every port, so the lane shapes the plan. Our Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Auckland offices arrange RoRo movements, with Adelaide and Fremantle also serviced, supported by 270+ partner locations.
Sailing frequency is the constraint to plan around. RoRo tonnage runs to fixed rotations and often calls less frequently than container services, so book space early. Transit times vary widely by origin and routing: sailings from Europe and the UK currently route via the Cape of Good Hope, adding roughly 14 days. We give a realistic window at quote stage and confirm cut-offs alongside your sea freight forwarding schedule.

A roll-on/roll-off ship is a vessel with built-in ramps and flat internal decks, so wheeled and tracked cargo can be driven or towed aboard instead of lifted by crane. Ramp capacities and deck clearances are published by the carrier.
Roll-on/roll-off shipping is the method of loading cargo that rolls. A unit boards under its own power, or on a roll trailer towed aboard at the terminal, and rolls off the same way.
RoRo shipping is shorthand for roll-on/roll-off shipping. For Magellan clients, it means moving self-propelled and wheeled heavy plant, including mining, construction and agricultural machinery, between Australia and overseas ports.
