Magellan Gives Back

We have been in a reflective mood lately at Magellan.  Sometimes it’s important to pause and reevaluate what’s important to us and what we are grateful for.  We only had to look around our offices to realise what is all too easy to forget – our very real privilege.  Sure things aren’t perfect – nothing is. But our daily gripes and grumbles are petty compared with the disadvantage many people in Australia experience daily, especially our First Nations people.

Magellan helping nippers make a sun smart splash this summer

Magellan Logistics is a very proud sponsor of Fairhaven Surf Life Saving Club Nippers program, supporting the logistics and transport of gear packs for new and existing nippers with packs including a Cap; Broad brim sunhat; Blue sun protection rash vest; Towel, Drink Bottle and Gear Bag.

The Fairhaven SLSC Nippers has a proud history of teaching children how to have fun & keep safe on the beach since the summer of 1972/73.

The program is designed for children aged 5-14 & aims to teach them to be aware of important beach hazards (such as rips), as well as helping them to develop surf swimming & boarding skills.

It also provides a terrific opportunity for physical activity, social interaction with peers & to improve awareness regarding environmental issues affecting our beaches & waterways.

As Nippers move through the program they also acquire basic first aid & resuscitation skills.

Fairhaven is a beautiful surf beach located on the Great Ocean Road between Anglesea and Lorne. This magnificent stretch of sand and surf takes in Aireys Inlet, Fairhaven, Moggs Creek and Eastern View and is where founder and managing director of Magellan Logistics, David Thatcher, enjoys the New Year holidays with his family on the Victorian coastline.

Magellan Supports Summer Water Safety

The Festive Season break in Australia sees many families head to the beach to enjoy the traditional sun, surf and swim that is holiday time.

Founder and Managing Director of Magellan Logistics, David Thatcher enjoys the New Year holidays with his family on the Victorian coast near Fairhaven.  Many people know of this nook in the Great Ocean Road as the place with “The Pole House” – a pedestal house built in the late 1970s by Frank Dixon.

David’s family chooses to lend their support to another Victorian icon, the Nipper program.  Run by the Fairhaven Life Saving Club, Nippers has 500 under 14 year olds who train for water and beach competitions, water and surf safety certificates.  Parents and teenage members of the Club watch over Nippers as they perform ocean swims or learn board technique.

The hands on participation in the surf with the Nippers program is a world away from the freight forwarding and customs clearance issues that keep David busy with Magellan Logistics for most of the year.

Although the Fairhaven Surf Lifesaving Club did make news in early January as a spotlight was shone on its efforts to run the Nippers program and provide the community with surf patrols without a club house.

“Lending a hand to the vital surf lifesaving work done by the Fairhaven Club is always pleasure,” says David.  “Organising my family’s commitment to Nippers, with my children as participants and my wife and I as volunteers is almost as much work as guaranteeing my clients’ international air freight arrives on time.”
